WIP: 2025-2026 School Year Books

(WIP stands for Work in Progress)

Each school year, I create a Google document to compile the award-winning and starred children’s, middle-grade, and YA books into one document for easy access. Today, I added the Edgar and Eisner award winners. Tonight, the Lodestar award winners will be announced.

In honor of that upcoming announcement, here are the Lodestar award winners from past years.

To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose

Winner of the Lodestar Award (announced August 2024).

“In this series launch, Anequs, an Indigenous teen, finds the first dragon egg seen in her community in generations. According to the Anglish who conquered her people’s land, Anequs must enroll in an approved dragon academy and raise the hatchling by its standards, or the creature will be killed. Debut novelist Blackgoose, a member of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe and lineal descendant of Ousamequin Massasoit, interrogates colonialism through her fantasy lens.” (Source: Publishers Weekly

“Three years after discovering her power as a Leopard, Sunny Nwazue, now 15, must embark on yet another dangerous journey. Tasked with retrieving what the Nimm women (her and Chichi’s ancestors) stole from Udide, the Great Spider Artist, Sunny and her coven—even-tempered Orlu, brash Sasha, and clever Chichi—have no choice other than to comply or risk their pasts and futures. (Fantasy. 12-16)” Source: Kirkus Reviews
